Bruce Buchanan
Bruce Buchanan can pinpoint the moment he became a fan of heroic fiction. When he was six, he accompanied his parents to the Kmart in Shelby, N.C., Bruce’s hometown. On his way to scope out the toy aisle, something caught his eye: A Spider-Man comic book, bagged with two other comics.
His father had a rule: We’ll buy you any book you want, as long as you read it. So Bruce eagerly ripped open the mylar bag and discovered a world in which protagonists aren’t perfect, but they strive to serve the greater good. This lesson continues to guide his writing decades later.
He’s always wanted to be a published novelist. But he never quite got there in three unsuccessful attempts to finish a manuscript. In early 2023, Bruce decided he would give writing fiction one last try—and this time, quitting was off the table. He read craft books, picked the brains of veteran writers, and developed a time management plan.
The result? THE BLACKSMITH’S BOY (Aug. 2025), a New Adult fantasy novel. Wild Ink Publishing, a small, traditional press based in Pennsylvania, signed the book. Wild Ink subsequently signed Bruce’s adult superhero novel, THE RETURN OF THE CERULEAN BLUR (May 2026) as well as THE QUEEN’S DAUGHTER (Dec. 2026), the sequel to THE BLACKSMITH’S BOY.
Bruce continues to write, having published nearly 20 stories in anthologies and literary magazines from various publishers. He and his wife, Amy Joyner Buchanan (the author of five non-fiction books) live in Greensboro with their son Jackson, a freshman music major at UNC-Greensboro, and their two beloved cats, Felix and Susan. Away from the keyboard, he works in corporate communications for a large law firm.
